Google announced to release “Nexus Player” an Android TV –compatible set top box in Japan, stating that it will be on sales in the late February and the price will be 12,800 yen.
TV makers such as Sharp and Sony have announced to adopt Android TV for their TV platforms. Nexus player, connected to the HDMI terminal of a general TV, makes it possible to use the Android TV platform provided by google, so that the users can enjoy TV apps, video distribution, games, etc. In Japan, it is planned to use Android TV to distribute video contents such as movie and video distribution such as Hulu and Google play, and video contents such as cooking recipes. Moreover, the users can enjoy games such as Final Fantasy 3, soul caliber, with exclusive-use controller.
There is a tread to adopt smart-phone OS in TVs, for example, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Panasonic adopt Tizen, WbOS, FirefoxOS, respectively.
Chris Yerga, vice president of Google as Asia Pacific head told “TV makers adopting Android TV can user the platform of Google play widely used worldwide. Being able to provide an abundant variety of apps and video contents to users will be great differentiation”, appealing the advantage of Android TV over the other platforms.
